Error launching browser window:no XBL binding for browser

Category: Web Surfing

Mozilla Firefox is known for being much safer than other browsers, but sometimes you can get some strange error messages, in most cases because of incompatible extensions. Still, there is no need to despair, it is very easy to fix them.

You can get this particular error message - Error launching browser window:no XBL binding for browser - after installing an extension or after you've updated to a newer version either the program or the extension.

Error launching browser window:no XBL binding for browser

In my case it was an incompatibility in Google Pagerank Status, but then again, this is just an example.

How to fix it

First, you need to open Firefox in Safe mode. If you didn't delete the links in the Start Menu when you installed it, you have a direct link to the Safe mode version there. But if you did, it's very easy to do it manually.

Just go to Start -> Run and in there type "cmd". This will get you into Command prompt. From there, go to the directory where you installed Firefox (usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox) as shown in the picture: use CD to change directory (you can use the TAB key to auto complete a directory name or file to make it faster), DIR to see the files and directory in the specified location. (You can also change drives if you need with : , for example: D: ).

cd Mozilla Firefox --safe-mode

Once you are in the Firefox directory type: firefox.exe --safe-mode

After you get into safe mode, all you have to do is go to Tools -> Extensions in the menu, select the extension which caused problems and uninstall it.

Firefox extensions

Restart your browser and all should be working fine again.

works wonders
Just worked wonders for me. Once in safemode I only had to update all my extensions instead of deleting the I don't know which one that stucked firefox. Restart FF and no more error message.
THX!

XBL Binding Error fixed
Great! Thanks! The only problem was that I keep thinking I was doing DOS (circa 1980s) and then paid more attention to the quotes. ;-)
